The day we know as Independence Day has a few information you might not know. So while your grilling everything in your fridge why not stop and learn something?
1. Wait What?
America's Independence wasn't actually declared on the 4th, but was really declared two days earlier by Continental Congress. July 2, 1776 was also when the Continental Congress officially announced the U.S.A free.
So why do we think it was the Fourth? Because that's when the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Also, because the document itself portrays the date July 4, 1776 as the day it was adopted. This is where the mixing up of the dates occurred.
2.Then When Was It Signed?
Most people think that the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th as well. But guess what, it wasn't. Most delegates signed the document on Aug. 2, when the Secretary of Congress produced a nice sparkling copy of the Declaration. This was almost a whole month later!
3.What About The Celebrations?
While our favorite Barbecue day will more than likely always be the Fourth of every July of every year, this date was not the original celebration date. Yeah, will shocker right? The original day was actually July 8 and was held in Philadelphia where a parade and the firing of guns took place.
After that the word about America's Independence slowly got around and everyone celebrated when the news reached them. When Britain had finally discovered the news it had been more than a month later.
4.Who made the first flag?
If you've ever been to the Besty Ross House in Philadelphia, then you've probably felt the overwhelming feeling you get you eye-full of the famous scene. A mannequin of Ms. Betsy sewing the Flag - our first symbol of freedom - behind a wall of Plexiglas as if the site is too fragile to touch. This house is where the National Flag was first made. Or so we think. The story was told to the world by her descendants. So of course there might be a few details there just to make themselves look good. But you can research more on this topic yourself. I'm done. D-O-N-E. Joking. Who sewed the first flag we really don't know. But what we do Know is that Frances Hopkinson is the one who designed it.
